The primary purpose of a recertification course is to give participants who are currently certified American Red Cross Lifeguarding the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Lifeguarding training is conducted and evaluated in water depths ranging from 3 to 13 feet. Candidates should be able to comfortably submerged in waters of at least 10 feet to take this course.
CANCELLATION POLICY
A $15 fee applies to all cancellations. A pro-rated refund will be issued for cancellations made within 5 days of the class. No refunds will be granted after that point, no exceptions.
PREREQUISITES
- Hold a current certification, or expired by no more than 30 days, in American Red Cross Lifeguarding that included training in deep water 7 feet or deeper.
- Successfully complete the two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations below:
1. Submerge, resurface, and swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or both. Back or side strokes are not allowed. Use goggles if needed. Then, tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs. Finally, swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or both.
2. Start in the water and swim 20 yards (goggles not allowed). Submerge to 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, and swim 20 yards on your back to return, holding the object with both hands and keeping your face near the surface. Exit the water without a ladder or steps.
CERTIFICATION VALIDITY
Participants who complete the Lifeguard Recertification course will receive a 2-year American Red Cross certificate in Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water), CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, and First Aid. To maintain certification, you must either pass the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Recertification course or retake the full course before the certificate expires. A 30-day grace period may apply but does not extend the certification beyond 2 years. After expiration, a new American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is required.
COURSE LENGTH
Blended learning combines online sessions with in-person sessions conducted by a Red Cross-certified Lifeguarding instructor. The online session for the Lifeguarding course has 16 modules and takes approximately 6 hours to complete all modules of the online session. Each individual module takes approximately 15 – 30 minutes to complete. Total course instruction time is 9 hours, 15 minutes.
