The primary purpose of the courses in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to: Prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) professionals take over. Lifeguarding training is conducted and evaluated in water depths ranging from 3 to 13 feet. Candidates should be able to comfortably submerge in waters of at least 10 feet to take this course.

• Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the Lifeguarding course.
• Successfully complete the two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations below:
  1. Submerge, resurface, and swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or both. Back or side strokes are not allowed. Use goggles if needed. Then, tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs. Finally, swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or both.
  2. Start in the water and swim 20 yards (goggles not allowed). Submerge to 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, and swim 20 yards on your back to return, holding the object with both hands and keeping your face near the surface. Exit the water without a ladder or steps.

Participants who complete the Lifeguarding course will receive a 2-year American Red Cross certificate in Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water), CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, and First Aid.
